Andy Warhol "Avant Garde" Pop Art Mens and Womens T-Shirt
Andy Warhol used his arthouse The Factory (a aluminum-foiled and silver-painted art studio) to create some of the most infamous pop art the world has ever seen... .that's part of the reason we bring you this unusual pop art t-shirt... to pay homage to artists in general... and the artwork of Andy Warhol himself.
The man's biography is a vertible cornucopia of A-list fame, scandal and tragedy (much like Roman Polanski's life)... this man who coined the well-known phrase "15 Minutes of Fame" was shot three times by Valerie Solanas on July 3rd, 1968 (two days later RFK was shot, overshadowing the event)... Warhol's injuries were so severe it almost killed him, he was never the same person after this event.
How's that for glory and tragedy?
We all know Andy's most famous works, the "Campbell's Soup I" and the Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Jackie-O "Faces" prints... the uber-iconic "Soup" exhibit was the first artistic showing that directly confronted people with the idea of pop art, and the indeterminable question... what is art?
In our humble opinion... the artists quotes and ideologies were worth much more attention than his art work... Warhol was a thinker... he is quoted so many times, each with so much truth and direct insight into the nature of our society... he could have been much more than a famous artist.
An idea expressed in his book "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol"... he states "Making money is art, and working is art and good business is the best art"... so true... it's a shame that the majority of capitalist multi-death-corporations don't adhere to this honorable capitalist mantra... the world would be a better place with this phrase posted at the door of each downtown office high-rise.
Besides Warhol's amazing art and ideology, both of which are seen on thousands of graphic t-shirts around the world... he was a film-maker, he made movies too! Now given, many of Warhol's films are quite eccentric and/or experimental... nonetheless, he explored the world of artistic statement (hundreds of times) through the use of film recording. Some of Any's most notable arthouse movies (many starring regular Factory characters Edie Sedgwick, Viva, Ultra Violet, and Candy Darling):
- Sleep: 5 hours of John Giorno sleeping. - Empire: An 8 hour shot of the building as day turns to night. - Poor Little Rich Girl: Simply a day in the life of Factory Girl Superstar, Edie Sedgwick. - The Chelsea Girls: The daily life of bohemian residents at the famous Hotel Chelsea in New York.
It's difficult to create an original tshirt that pays homage to an artist so prolific... many shirts just rip-off what Warhol has done, splattering a cheap copy on the shirt with very little thought put into it's meaning (Warhol would NOT be proud), so instead, we chose to deal in the obvious/abstract that Warhol made himself famous with... Andy Warhol we ain't, but we wish we were.
This last quote sums up the genius of this legendary artist: "What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca Cola, too. A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it."
