If anyone had the Roadhouse Blues, it was crazy Jim... The Lizard King... a man that insisted on a good time... he enjoyed himself at any, and all, cost!
While The Doors as a band weren't the most musically talented; relative to some of their peers at the time... they certainly knew how to throw down a big groovy tune... and with time, they progressively matured (pun intended).
Of course, Mr. Mojo Risin' could write some wicked spaced out poetry; creating an undeniably spooky, tripped-out atmosphere... quite an unusual mix for a band who generally played smoothed-out psychedelic blues rock standards... kind of a ying/yang thing.
But as we all know, the bands music is only half the story of this legendary sordid tale... the other half revolves around Morrison's indelible personality, the wild man... the meteoric rise, and cataclysmic fall of a classic rock-and-roll star.
Having been arrested multiple times over the years for charges ranging; Petty Larceny, Disturbing the Peace, Resisting Arrest, Public Drunkenness, Vagrancy, Indecency, Public Obscenity, Lewd Lascivious Behavior, Public Profanity and Public Exposure... the man enjoyed himself!
Mr. Mojo was once even beat-up by bouncers at the Las Vegas nightclub "Pussycat a' Go-Go"... for smoking a cigarette like it was a joint... they whacked him over the head with a billy club, making him bleed. Man, tough joint.
Jim Morrison was the fourth member of the "Forever 27 Club"... along with Robert Johnson (blues legend), Brian Jones (Rolling Stones), Jimi Hendrix (Experience), Janis Joplin (Big Brother and The Holding Company), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), and the most recent (at the time of writing); Amy Winehouse... all exceptional musicians with the entire world at their fingertips... all suspiciously dead at 27 years old.
James Douglas Morrison bellowed some of the greatest nihilist quotes ever to influence the young minds of generations to come... here's a couple that immediately come to mind:
"I'll tell you this, I don't know what's gonna happen man...
but I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames!!!"
"I don't think there should be a president man...
I think it should be a TOTAL Democracy!!!"
Many people wrongly assume that the bands name was inspired by Aldous Huxley's book of Mescaline / LSD experiments "The Doors of Perception"... but the truth of the matter is slightly more intellectual than a simple drug reference, the inspiration was gleaned from the original quote written by poet William Blake (Book: The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790) ):
"If the doors of perception were cleansed...
everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite"
Which is really quite suiting in retrospect...
since that's exactly how Jim Morrison lived his life: Infinitely.
We want the world, and we want it... NOW!!!
