HST Campaign Poster "Thompson for Sheriff" Men's T-Shirt

The Battle of Aspen is where it all began.... with Hunter's 1970 article for Rolling Stone entitled "Freak Power (in the Rockies)"... detailing Joe Edwards (lawyer, biker, non-conformist) run for mayor of Aspen, Colorado.

This was the turning point that began HST on a path of disobedient civil service... albeit short-lived (who could stand themselves being a politician anyway?!?)... this was what introduced Gonzo to the ideology that even a 'head' could be (should be) president in these crazy times!

After all, there are good reasons that unlikely anti-heroes like Hunter Thompson, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, and Jon Stewart gain slight political aspirations... they all want to see real change, and they happen to find themselves in a position to actually further that ideal... despite their seamy backgrounds, ethics and abuses... all it takes to gain political office, is approval.

No matter what drugs you're on, if the people agree with your platform, you can win... and the "Freak Power" platform in 1970 was actually a serious political direction for millions of younger hippies during the backlash of the Vietnam war (a 15 year war at that point, since 1955).

Now of course, I'm not taking into account political corruption... which is exactly why Thompson didn't win... the old money would never let youngblood slip through the front door like that, they banned together and did everything in their power to make sure the freaks stayed outside.

While there's much more I could mention about this unusual American historical event... I'll leave you with one of Thompsons brilliant political moves, illustrating his savant and iconoclastic nature: During the campaign, Thompson shaved his head bald and would publicly refer to the crew-cut ex-military Republican incumbent as, "My long-haired opponent".

HST is one of the few famous people that actually deserves to be remembered...
unfortunately there's No Sympathy for The Devils Rejects!
