Space Rock is an acquired taste, although I don't see why... I guess that tells you which side I'm on! :)
Being a huge 70's heavy metal fan, it was inevitable that names like "Lemmy" and "Hawkwind" would become apparent... and so they did, and so I explored, and so I fell in love, for the life of me... doomed to explore the outer realms of outer space in my outer mind!!
Vibrant psychic journeys of an album, like "Space Ritual", don't come along very often... the vast majority of music creators don't really break any ground, they don't take the listener anywhere further than their living room. Not so with the mighty Hawkwind... at a time when there was really just "rock" and "psyche-out"... nobody had perfectly meshed the two in a manner strong enough to CREATE A NEW GENRE OF MUSIC!
The idea behind space rock is usually tied to drug use, but it's more than just that... it's meditation... it's exploration through music... it's a human attempt at astral projection... it's mind travel. All of which, are much more than simply drug use.
So if you're wondering if you would like the Hawkwind music that Dave Brock, Lemmy Kilmister (yes, of Motorhead fame), Nik Turner and others have created... let's just put it this way... it's capable of being a religious experience... it can change the way you look at the world, the way you see life.
And that's a Brainstorm!
